Lumber Ridge Laurel Mists – Clue 1 Finished!

Laurel Mists MKAL Clue 1 Finished! I managed to finish ahead of schedule! Getting started was troublesome; the instructions have you place markers at the beginning to mark the edge and center spine. The markers are fiddly when starting out and I ended up restarting the shawl a couple times, but I’m able to keep track of what I’m doing now that I’m on my way!

About halfway through – messy slipped edge stitches!

A surprise for me when I read the first clue was the inclusion of a mosaic chart in the instructions. I planned to take a mosaic knitting class at Fiber Fest this March with a friend, and like most fun plans this year had to be cancelled. How fortuitous that I get to learn this technique now! I did feel I had to keep a looser tension than normal, and it took about half the chart for the design to start showing up.

My Wanderlust sock blank has a lot of solid purple in it; I was hoping to get to see some color variation work out in the design but it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe in the next clue!

The mosaic pattern is starting to become clear!

I like the ridge pattern a lot – it’s close enough to stockinette to be easy, and yet the extra little garter ridge creates a nice texture to look at and feel. The ridge pattern is also very easy to track the pattern repeats because you can just count the garter ridges.

I’m not normally a fan of slipped edge stitches on a shawl as I don’t feel I make them neatly. However, in this case they disguise the color changes very well and it will be easy to weave the ends in.

After clue 1, this is the yarn I have left:

  • MC (Desert Clay) – 84 grams
  • CC1 (Wanderlust) – 109 grams
  • CC2 (Lost Lagoon) – 120 grams

So far, so good! Looking forward to the next clue! It’s not too late to start! Grab the pattern on Ravelry or the SweetGeorgia website!
