How to Design Dance Costumes – Fabrics

Next in this series, I’m going to share with you the fabrics I like to use when creating costumes. I’ll also share where I source the materials I use. You’ll always find all these tutorials on the Tutorials Page, and resources I like on the Recommended Resources Page.

Fabric Types

I really love using matte jersey for making dance costumes, especially the antibacterial and wicking jersey you can find at Mood Fabrics. It has a great drape and is good to use for both the internal leotard as well as the main costume fabric. I also love the antibacterial and wicking properties of the fabric which is great for performance and athletic wear.

Mesh fabrics are also good to use, however I prefer using powernet mesh fabric as it’s much stronger. This typically comes in plain colors (black/beige/white) but you can sometimes find other colors online. You can also use it to line your internal leotard.

Stretch velvet or velour looks great on stage and is comfortable to wear – make sure to pay attention to the nap of the fabric when you cut it!

Sequined fabric always looks beautiful on stage, however, from experience it is a challenge to sew and you do need to make sure it’s stretchy.

Embroidered fabrics also look good on stage and are very beautiful. They can also be very expensive so I recommend using them as appliques or trim, or in smaller areas. If used for a skirt you may want to consider lining them to prevent a heel getting caught in the stitching.

Fabric Sources

Most fabrics I purchase from Mood Fabrics, but I can also recommend Gorgeous Fabrics and Fabric.com. I also recommend checking out your city’s garment district, if there is one. You can often find great unique fabrics, sometimes at quite the discount! If you have something specific in mind and need all your fabrics to match, I can also recommend Chrisanne Clover – their catalog is full of inspiration and they have whole suites of fabric and trims that match.
