Color Gamp Shawl

I wove this Color Gamp Shawl last year, but I postponed finishing the fringe until after the holidays! A color gamp is usually a sample to see how woven colors interact together, but this is made as a larger shawl. The Color Gamp Shawl is featured in the School of SweetGeorgia’s Handwoven Colour course, which I highly recommend if you want to learn about how individual color selections alter the perception of color in the final cloth.

I used three “Party of Five” sets in Jellybean, Sea to Sky, and Whisper. I also added Lemon Curd for yellow and Ultraviolet for a dark “framing” color. Because there is one color that is the same in both Sea to Sky and Whisper sets, I was able to swap out for Lemon Curd and keep it to a 15 color gradient. It’s really fun to see the colors blend together!

I changed the sett to 12 ends per inch to fit the width on my rigid heddle loom. I finally learned how to draw the fell line to get nice selvedges by the end of this project! If I was to make this again I would want to make the warp 3 yards long to be able to make 4 repeats of the color pattern.

Have you made a color gamp before? If you have, was it just as a sample or did you make a shawl or larger project with it? Even with my mistakes I absolutely love how this turned out and can’t wait to wear it! I love looking at the color variation where different colors intersect!
