Baby Blocks

Did you get any crafting done over the holidays? I managed to dig out some scraps I had from two baby quilts I made a few years ago. I had adapted the “Mosaic” quilt from Fat Quarter Style to incorporate different panel designs, and it turned out really well! One of the ongoing projects I have is a sampler quilt of all the baby quilts I’ve made; I save an extra block from each baby quilt and when I get to have my own baby I’ll put the blocks together. I never got around to making the extra blocks when I made the last quilts. These two blocks came together rather quickly, and now I can add them to the pile of other saved blocks.

Mosaic is a quick block to piece together and there is zero waste. Perfect! I’ve used the Fat Quarter Style book for several baby quilts and can recommend getting it. I have a lot of fabric set aside for a queen-sized “Primrose” quilt but haven’t cut the blocks out yet. I’m intimidated by all the pieces!

I have a few baby quilts to make this year and decided to try a new pattern in the book, “Lattice”. It incorporates some large half square triangles and I chain pieced them together. It’s great mindless sewing for when you want to sew something but don’t want to think too much. I was able to cut out two baby quilts’ worth in an afternoon and sew the triangles together in an evening. I still need to cut them apart! Maybe later this weekend.

Have you tried chain or strip piecing your quilt blocks together? I find that it can really cut down the time on getting a quilt top made. Do you have other time or effort efficient strategies you like to use when you’re crafting?
